About the Artist: Tuscia d'Arte  About the Artist: Tuscia d'Arte    0.00  - - Buy Now  0  Founded in 1982, Ceramiche d’Arte Tuscia is located in the picturesque hill town of Montelupo Fiorentina, right outside of Florence.

Montelupo became a hub of decorative ceramics in the 13th century, when Moorish traders traveling to Florence along the old Roman road, passed right through Montelupo with ceramic wares from Spain. Then, during the Renaissance, artisans in Montelupo began elaborating on the ceramic designs, adding realistic imagery and brighter colors – transforming it into the high art form it is today.

At Ceramiche d’Arte Tuscia, five local artists work to recreate the centuries-old traditions of Montelupo ceramists. The shapes, colors, and designs reflect a variety of influences: Arabic, Spanish, and Renaissance Italian.

In this photo, Gabriele is painting red poppies. Gabriele started painting at Tuscia when he was 15 years old and is now the principal artist, responsible for designing and executing the most intricate designs.

Pictured here, Daniela is the newest artist to join Tuscia. She has been painting at Tuscia for 2 years and on the day I met her, was working on one of my favorite pieces, the spaghetti canisters.

While the building looks worn down, it is quite picturesque set in the midst of rolling green hills. On the day I visited Tuscia, I found 3 of the artists busy at work and shelves upon shelves of beautiful ceramic art stacked and displayed throughout the small building.

David met me at the train station when I visited, gave me the grand tour of the workshop, and when I was back in California, he helped me figure out the logistics for my first Emilia Ceramics order.
